LAS VEGAS (AP) - An officer with the North Las Vegas Police Department fatally shot a man at a city park after authorities said hr threatened to shoot himself and walked toward police with a gun raised.
Officers responded to a call Monday of a man with a gunshot wound at Craig Ranch Regional Park, police said. When officers arrived, the man pulled out a gun and threatened to kill himself, police said.
The man who was later shot by police had waved someone down and asked them to call 911, saying he had shot himself, police spokesman Alex Cuevas said. The extent of his injuries before police arrived was unclear.
Negotiators spoke with the man for several hours, at one point using a police robot to give him water and encourage him to surrender, authorities said.
“Eventually, the man stopped communicating with officers and approached them with his gun raised,” the department said.
Cuevas said one officer shot the man about three and a half hours after the 911 call was made. The man was taken to University Medical Center where he died.
It was unclear if the officers were wearing body cameras. No officers were injured.
The department said the officer who shot the man will be identified within 72 hours of the shooting. The officer was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the investigation outcome.
