LAS VEGAS (AP) - Authorities in Las Vegas say improper disposal of a large quantity of used fireworks in a trash container caused a house fire that displaced a family of five.
A fire that started in the trash container next to a garage wall spread up the wall into the attic of the two-story home Friday night, fire officials said.
Spent fireworks can stay hot for a long time and should be soaked in a bucket of water for at least an hour before being put in a trash container, officials said.
Neighbors notified the house’s occupants after seeing smoking coming from the roof.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
A statement issued by the fire department reminded the public that fireworks are illegal in Las Vegas all year except so-called safe-and-sane fireworks from June 28 through July Fourth.
