LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police on Tuesday arrested a man they say was carrying an assault rifle and wearing military fatigues similar to a National Guard uniform, authorities said.

A National Guard member stationed downtown alerted police after spotting the unfamiliar man outfitted in combat gear around 1:30 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison. The man arrived in a civilian car, Madison said.

Officers took Gregory Wong, 31, into custody on suspicion of transportation of an assault weapon, he said.

Contact information for Wong, a Gardena resident, could not immediately be found.

Wong, who was also carrying a pistol, told police he was heading downtown to provide security to a friend’s establishment, Madison said.

“While investigators are still looking into the incident, at this time it does not appear that Mr. Wong intended to harm anyone,” he said.

The National Guard is deployed across Los Angeles to help the LAPD police large protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died while being arrested in Minneapolis.
