Hollywood activist Debra Messing found herself getting roasted in Twitter’s trending news on Tuesday for her attempt to link President Trump to Adolf Hitler with Photoshopped propaganda.
The “Will & Grace” star told over 600,000 Twitter followers that Mr. Trump was sending a “dog whistle to white nationalists and Nazis” by holding up a bible during his visit to St. John’s Church, which was burned by rioters in Washington D.C.
“The Hitler” feed — prompted by the photo juxtaposition of Mr. Trump and the Nazi both holding bibles — soon became part of Twitter’s trending news feed with over 109,000 posts.
“A lot of people are sharing an image that appears to show Trump and Hitler holding a bible in the same way,” BuzzfeedNews editor Craig Silverman, responded. “The Trump pic is from June 1, but the Hitler pic was photoshopped to add the bible.”
Others questioned how Ms. Messing was allowed to share the tweet without running afoul of the social media giant’s terms of service.
Critics mocked the tweet with images of Mr. Trump and Hitler both drinking from a glass of water.
Sen. Ted Cruz also noted the absurdity of assuming any image of a person holding the holy book could be seen as an endorsement of white nationalism or Nazis.
“Hollywood elites: anyone holding a Bible is Hitler,” the Texas Republican deadpanned. “This is idiocy.”
The anti-Trump actress also made national headlines in March when she apologized to the transgender community for making cupcakes decorated as vulvas.
“I want to apologize to my trans sisters,” she wrote after receiving negative feedback from the LGBTQ community. “This photo was supposed to be light, & sassy. The first thing I thought when I saw this photo was ’wow how wonderful. Each one is unique in color and shape and size.’”
