Susan Rice said Friday the unification of America can happen once Joseph R. Biden is able to leave President Trump and his Senate allies in the “trash heap of history.”

Former President Obama’s national security adviser made the comments during an appearance with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

“This election and whoever Joe Biden chooses among many very talented candidates is about getting Joe Biden in the White House,” Mrs. Rice said. “[He’s] somebody who can heal and unify the nation — and remove Donald Trump and consign him and those who supported him in the Senate to the trash heap of history.”

Mrs. Mitchell noted that her guest is on the list of “prominent women” being considered as a running mate for Mr. Biden, the presumed Democratic nominee.

Steve Guest, the Republican Party’s Rapid Response Director, jumped on the “unhinged” commentary, which included the claim that Mr. Trump’s administration is “racist to its core.”

Some Twitter users reacted to the interview by noting the contradictory nature of Mrs. Rice’s messaging. The responses include:

  • “Nothing like claiming you want to heal the country while saying those who oppose you belong in a trash heap.”
  • “That’s a harsh way to talk about people, including her [Republican] son!”
  • “Strangely reminiscent of ’the basket of Deplorables’ comment [by Hillary Clinton in 2016].
  • “More tolerance from the left. And you thought they respected your freedom of association.”
