CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - On the eve of the fifth anniversary of a church shooting by a white supremacist who gunned down nine black parishioners in Charleston, U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and actress Viola Davis will take part in a panel discussion about a documentary that tells the story of the crime.
The two will be joined in the virtual discussion Tuesday by other producers of the “Emanuel” documentary, including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay, The Post & Courier reported.
Clyburn, who represents Columbia, South Carolina, said Monday the anniversary of the shooting of a bible study group in Emanuel AME church comes amid “one of the most interesting periods” in American history due to international protests following the death of George Floyd.
“I cannot think of any other time that this kind of reexamination has taken place,” he said.
The documentary is available to stream for free until June 23 on Vimeo due to a deal between Comcast, NBCUniversal, and Starz.
The shooter, Dylann Roof, was sentenced to death in 2017 for the massacre, becoming the first person ordered executed for a federal hate crime.
