Get ready to see Doug Williams’ story on the big screen.
Deadline reported Thursday that the former Redskins quarterback will be the focus of a new sports biopic from Will Packer Productions, the producers of “Night School” and “Girls Trip.”
Williams, now an executive with the Washington Redskins, became the first black quarterback to ever win the Super Bowl when he led the Redskins in 1988 over the Denver Broncos. Williams spent nine seasons in the NFL from 1978 to 1989, including four with the Redskins following a stint in the USFL.
Will Packers Productions have secured the rights to Williams’ story and will assign a writer to develop the screenplay. No director or actors have been attached.
“As NFL players today raise their voices around the fight for justice and equality, none stood taller than Doug Williams, who proved once and for all that the notion of an African American being ill equipped to play quarterback was nothing more than a fallacy,” Will Packer told Deadline. “Doug’s inspirational story will positively impact fans of all ages for years to come.”
Williams serves as the Redskins’ senior vice president of player development. He was reassigned from the player personnel side earlier this year following the arrival of coach Ron Rivera.
