3 races too close to call in West Virginia primary election

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Three races remained too close to call in the West Virginia primary election a day after the polls closed.

With some precincts still not reporting Wednesday, the races were undecided in the Democratic primaries for the U.S. House 3rd District and attorney general, and one of three races in the state Supreme Court.

The House race was between doctoral student Lacy Watson, Hilary Turner of Huntington, Huntington bus service CEO Paul Davis and labor union executive Jeff Lewis. The winner will meet 3rd District Rep. Carol Miller in November.

Labor attorney Sam Petsonk and Isaac Sponaugle, a delegate from Pendleton County, were separated by 2,000 votes in the attorney general’s race. In November, the winner will go up against Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Four candidates vied for a 12-year term on the Supreme Court: attorney Bill Wooton, Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit, assistant prosecutor Kris Raynes and Family Court Judge Jim Douglas. The primary serves as the general election for the Supreme Court, whose races became nonpartisan in 2016.
