Shepard Smith is joining CNBC, the network announced Wednesday, where he is set to host an hourlong nightly news program in his first role since leaving Fox News last year.

“The News with Shepard Smith” is scheduled to begin airing on the network this fall, the Wall Street Journal first reported. The show is set to run Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. ET.

Mr. Smith will also assume the roles of CNBC’s chief general news anchor and chief breaking general news anchor and will act as executive editor for “The News,” the network announced.

“Gathering and reporting the news has been my life’s work. I am honored to continue to pursue the truth, both for CNBC’s loyal viewers and for those who have been following my reporting for decades in good times and in bad,” Mr. Smith said in a statement.

Mr. Smith, 56, credited CNBC’s chairman, Mark Hoffman, with pitching him as the host of a show that will “cut through the static to deliver facts, in context and with perspective.”

“We’re thrilled that Shep, who’s built a career on an honest fight to find and report the facts, will continue his pursuit of the truth at CNBC,” Mr. Hoffman said in a statement.

Mr. Smith joined Fox News at its start in 1996, and he spent 23 years at the channel before abruptly announcing his departure last October, including most recently as the host of “Shepard Smith Reporting.”
