Ben Shapiro, the conservative commentator who co-founded the Daily Wire website, is stepping down as its editor-in-chief after serving in that role since its launch in late 2015.
Mr. Shapiro will remain involved with the Daily Wire, a popular news and opinion website, “but will no longer drive its editorial direction,” The Blaze first reported Monday.
Jeremy Boreing, the Daily Wire’s chief operating officer, said that Mr. Shapiro will remain a part-owner of the site and now hold the role of editor emeritus, The Blaze reported.
John Bickley, a longtime Daily Wire writer and editor who contributed to the site under a pseudonym, “James Barrett,” will serve as its new editor-in-chief, The Blaze reported.
The Daily Wire and Mr. Shapiro did not immediately return messages requesting comment. However, they each shared The Blaze’s report from their respective Twitter accounts.
“John Bickley isn’t just a tremendous editor and writer, he’s a principled conservative and an honest human being,” Mr. Shapiro said in a statement included in the report he shared. “I can’t think of anyone better to take over as EIC, and I look forward to seeing the new, exciting editorial direction of the site.”
Mr. Shapiro, 36, and Mr. Boreing, 41, launched The Daily Wire in September 2015. The site has been viewed 3.85 billion times in the five years since, Mr. Boreing told The Blaze.
