Dr. Anthony Fauci says Americans who want the best chance to avoid coronavirus should strap on some goggles moving forward.

The infectious disease expert made the comments Wednesday during an interview with ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton.

“Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces,” he said. “So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it. … If you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can.”

Mr. Fauci said that goggles were indispensable for those who want “perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces.”

The doctor’s comments come as a national debate about how best to deal with the virus, which has claimed 150,000 U.S. lives, as it continues to rage.

Over 4.4 million Americans have contracted the virus out of a population of roughly 330 million.
