LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has hired a Chicago firm to perform a comprehensive review of the city’s police department amid weeks of protests.
The firm Hillard Heintze will perform the “top-to-bottom review” of the Louisville Metro Police Department, Fischer said in a statement.
“It is clear we need to reimagine what policing looks like, and that includes taking deep, hard looks to see what’s working well, and what we can be doing better,” Fischer said.
Protests have continued for weeks to call for police reform after emergency medical technician Breonna Taylor was fatally shot by police in her home on March 13. One of the three officers who shot into her home has been fired, and the city council has banned a controversial search warrant that was used to enter her home. Protesters want the three officers criminally charged. Fischer fired the police chief in early June.
“We are very confident that the findings and recommendations emerging from this review, upon implementation, will help the mayor, the permanent chief and every member of the department improve services delivered to all members of the city’s communities,” Ken Bouche, Hillard Heintze CEO, said in a statement Thursday.
The firm will review, among other things, the training in use of force and bias-free policing.
