With Burlington’s traditional July 3 fireworks over Lake Champlain cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the city’s mayor encouraged residents to make noise Friday evening.
Mayor Miro Weinberger announced a plan for residents to “make noise” from their own homes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Burlington Free Press reported. Weinberger encouraged gatherings from back yards, front stoops or sidewalks to sound off “together and yet apart.”
The hashtag #btvjuly3 can be used to share experiences on social media.
“Even though it will look different this year, we hope that this holiday will still give everyone a chance to spend some time outside, enjoy our families and loved ones, and reflect on the ideals of America that we still are working to make a reality for everyone,” Weinberger said in a statement from his briefing.
On Friday, he urged residents to stay vigilant in their efforts to prevent the spread of the virus by minimizing exposure to crowds, close contact settings, and closed-in spaces and reminded them that “setting off fireworks in Burlington is illegal and dangerous. ”
