D.C. United midfielder Paul Arriola signed a three-year contract extension through the 2023 season with a club option for 2024, the team announced Monday.

The extension locked up one of United’s best players, a U.S. Men’s National Team regular who has represented the country internationally since 2016.

Arriola is not playing in 2020 as he recovers from an ACL tear he suffered in the preseason.

“Paul has been an immense attacking player and fan favorite since he arrived at our club and we are thrilled to secure his long-term future,” general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. “We know Paul will be back stronger than ever and we look forward to his return at Audi Field.”

Arriola, 25, was the club’s second-leading goal-scorer in 2019 with six. He not only figures to be vital to United’s long-term plans, but also is on track to make the USMNT’s World Cup roster in 2022.
