CLEVELAND (AP) - A man who authorities said exchanged gunfire with Cleveland police inside a boarding house, leaving one officer wounded, has been charged with attempted murder and of felonious assault.
Darryl Borden, 42, of Cleveland, was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Wednesday. It wasn’t known if he’s retained an attorney.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Monday, when officers Jennifer Kilnapp, 26, and Bailey Gannon, 24, responded to a 911 call from a woman who said a man had threatened her and fired a shot through the floor, authorities said.
The officers entered the home and found Borden in a second-floor bathroom. He had his gun pointed at the door “waiting to ambush” the officers and shoot them when they arrived, according to court records.
When the officers opened the bathroom door, Borden fired several shots at them, hitting Kilnapp in the arm and back. Gannon fired shots at Borden as the officers retreated from the home, though none hit him.
A SWAT team soon responded and Borden was taken into custody there a short time later. Authorities say he has a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions in 15 felony cases dating to 1999.
Kilnapp, who has been an officer for nearly three years, is expected to fully recover from her wounds, authorities said. Gannon and the woman who made the 911 call were not injured.
