The Washington Wizards will honor Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, who died in June, by wearing a jersey patch with his No. 41 for the rest of the NBA season.
Unseld spent his entire career with the organization, then known as the Bullets, and led them to the 1978 NBA championship.
“Wes was a great player and a tremendous human being who we all admired as a pillar of this franchise for so long,” Monumental chairman and CEO Ted Leonsis said in a statement. “We are honored to pay tribute to him as an exceptional leader whose contributions both on and off the court have left an indelible mark on this organization.”
Additionally, the Washington Mystics’ uniforms in 2020 will feature a black band with Unseld’s No. 41.
Both teams will begin playing games later this month. The Mystics’ 2020 season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, begins on July 25. The Wizards’ first game of the NBA restart at Walt Disney World is July 30.
Monumental will also hang banners reading “Remembering Wes Unseld” outside Capital One Arena during July.
