As someone who spent part of his childhood in Maryland, not far from where the Washington Redskins played, Dwayne Haskins is familiar with the history and tradition of the NFL franchise.
Monday’s news that the team would retire the name “Redskins” and its primary logo depicting an American Indian man was no shock to anyone following the news in the last two weeks. For Haskins, now the team’s quarterback of the future, it brought on a moment of reflection.
“As a kid who grew up in the dmv it’ll always be #HTTR,” Haskins tweeted Monday, “but looking forward to the future.”
Haskins has mentioned he’s liked the name “Redtails” as a possible replacement. Redtails refers to the Tuskegee Airmen, the Black aviators of World War II, who painted the tails of their planes red. The word can also refer to red-tailed hawks, an important animal in some American Indian traditions.
“That’s if we have to change the name,” Haskins wrote at the time. “Now out my mentions.”
Now we can say with certainty: The name will be changed. The next time he plays, Haskins will have a different logo on his helmet.
