President Trump said Wednesday the phrase “Black Lives Matter” is a “symbol of hate” as he denounced New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to paint the slogan on Fifth Avenue.

Mr. Trump made the remark on Twitter in a series of posts slamming the Democrat’s proposal to paint the words on the street near the president’s Manhattan residence, Trump Tower.

“NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue,” Mr. Trump tweeted.

“Maybe our GREAT Police, who have been neutralized and scorned by a mayor who hates & disrespects them, won’t let this symbol of hate be affixed to New York’s greatest street,” said in another tweet. “Spend this money fighting crime instead!”
