LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky’s new attorney general has pledged to work with federal and state prosecutors, children’s advocates, medical experts and others in an effort to reduce the number of child abuse cases in the state.

“We are No. 1 in child abuse and neglect, and that has to stop, especially as we move into the new decade,” Attorney General Daniel Cameron said during a press conference Tuesday to announce the effort.

Cameron, who was sworn in Monday, said he joined a round-table discussion with various groups at the Kentucky Youth Advocates office in Louisville to discuss how they could better coordinate their work, the Courier Journal reported.

The newspaper reported last summer that federal statistics show Kentucky has the highest rate of child abuse or neglect in the nation.

Cameron said his office will develop a manual to help prosecutors statewide as they seek convictions on abuse and neglect charges.

“We need to do something meaningful,” Cameron said.
