PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Chinese scientist accused of participating in a conspiracy to steal trade secrets from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been returned to the United States to stand trial in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday that 50-year-old biochemist Gongda Xue had fought extradition from Switzerland.

He is alleged to have received cancer research his sister stole from a research facility in the Philadelphia suburbs.

Xue appeared in federal court Monday to face charges that include conspiracy, theft of trade secrets and wire fraud.

His defense attorneys have denied the allegations, questioned the research’s value and depicted Xue’s sister Yu Xue as the force behind the alleged crimes.

Yu Xue awaits sentencing after pleading guilty in 2018 to stealing research on cancer therapies, many she developed while working for GlaxoSmithKline.
