The Carolina Panthers are hiring Baylor coach Matt Rhule to fill their head coaching vacancy, reports said Tuesday morning.

During the season, the Panthers fired Ron Rivera, whom the Washington Redskins hired for the same position after the 2019 season.

Rhule turned around the Baylor program a year after the aftermath of Art Briles’ firing. Baylor went 1-11 in Rhule’s first season but finished 11-3 in 2019 and competed for a Big 12 title.

Rhule was reportedly scheduled to interview with the New York Giants for their coaching vacancy after meeting with Carolina officials, but owner David Tepper made Rhule an offer he like before he could go to the Giants interview. One report said the Giants were “stunned” by the turn of events.

The Giants went on to hire New England Patriots special teams coordinator and receivers coach Joe Judge as their head coach later Tuesday.

The Cleveland Browns are now the only team who need to hire a head coach.
