BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker announced the state set aside $1 million in security funding to protect houses of worship from potential terrorist attacks.
The grant will provide additional funding for nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of hate crimes but aren’t eligible for similar federal grants, Baker’s office announced Monday.
Baker’s announcement comes amid a wave of anti-Semitic attacks in recent years, including a stabbing at a Hanukkah celebration in New York that left five people injured.
Baker initially proposed the $1 million in funding in his supplemental budget proposal which was filed in September. The program was previously budgeted at $500,000.
Nonprofit groups will be able to receive the state funds by applying to the Commonwealth Nonprofit Safety Grant Program.
