The New York Giants are hiring Joe Judge to be their new head coach following the firing of Pat Shurmur, multiple reports said Tuesday.
Judge has been the New England Patriots’ special teams coordinator since 2015. In 2019, he also took on duties as their wide receivers coach.
The Giants were scheduled to interview Baylor coach Matt Rhule for the job Tuesday, but the Carolina Panthers reached an agreement to hire Rhule for the same job.
These hires follow the Washington Redskins’ choice of Ron Rivera and the Dallas Cowboys bringing in Mike McCarthy to fill openings. The Cleveland Browns are now the final team that needs to hire a new coach.
The news of Judge’s hiring broke about a half-hour after there were reports that New York requested permission to interview former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. ESPN later reported that the Giants have interest in Garrett as an offensive coordinator:
Source: #Giants requested permission from #Cowboys to interview Jason Garrett as offensive coordinator under new HC Joe Judge. Garrett’s 10 years of head coaching experience would be important asset to inexperienced HC. Also Garrett could develop Daniel Jones if interested.
