ANGOLA, La. (AP) - A man being held in a Louisiana prison died after a fight with another inmate, authorities said Sunday.

Major Jones, 32, was pronounced dead around 9:45 p.m. Saturday after the fight at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, according to a news release from the state Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Jones was involved in a fight around 8:45 p.m. Saturday with a 30-year-old inmate, the release says. Prison officers responded and took Jones to the prison’s treatment center, where he died.

Possible criminal charges are pending against the other inmate pending the outcome of the investigation and autopsy.

Jones was serving a life sentence for a second degree murder conviction in Sabine Parish. He’d been at Angola since July 2017.
