Meghan McCain pushed back Thursday at criticism directed at President Trump’s defense attorney Alan Dershowitz by citing his successful representation decades earlier of O.J. Simpson.

The daughter of former Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, came to the lawyer’s defense while co-hosting the latest episode of “The View” on ABC.

“I’m not a lawyer, I don’t know. I will say that Alan Dershowitz helped a serial killer get off, O.J. Simpson, so he must be a pretty good lawyer, because he did a good job with that, and I think O.J. Simpson is guilty,” Ms. McCain said.

“So he must be a pretty good lawyer, because we’re laughing all the time at him, and I don’t think that’s a person to be laughed at,” she said about Mr. Dershowitz.

Mr. Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor, is among a handful of attorneys representing Mr. Trump in the president’s ongoing impeachment trial in the Senate.

The attorney previously represented Simpson during the high-profile double murder trial that ended with the former athlete’s acquittal in 1995.

Ms. McCain referenced the Simpson case in response to her co-hosts criticizing Mr. Dershowitz for arguing during Mr. Trump’s impeachment trial this week against removing the president.

“Your election is in the public interest,” Mr. Dershowitz said Wednesday. “And if a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”

“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg described the attorney’s reasoning as “insane,” while colleague Sunny Hostin, a lawyer and ABC legal analyst, called it “a first-year law school argument.”
