BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s executive director has announced plans to step down.

Ed Bedrosian, who has been the commission’s executive director since 2015, will leave his post next week and return to a law firm where he previously worked.

“I came into this position with the goal of getting the commission up and running and opening casinos. I feel I have accomplished that, and it’s time to move on,” Bedrosian said in an interview. “It’s an exciting time for new technologies and new opportunities in the gaming world as sports betting takes hold in different states.”

Bedrosian will return to be a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP and work on sports betting issues, The Boston Globe reported Thursday.

Gaming Commission chairwoman Cathy Judd-Stein said in a state that Bedrosian “was instrumental in guiding complex regulatory preparations to ensure the successful opening of both MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor.”

The commission will meet to start the search for a new director on Jan. 9. Bedrosian laves the following day.

The commission’s deputy director Karen Wells will serve as interim director.
