SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah unemployment rate is now the lowest ever recorded at 2.3%, which also ties for lowest among U.S. states, state officials said Friday.
The milestone comes in December data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
“The job market is humming along at a feverish pace and is absorbing as much labor as possible,” said Mark Knold, chief economist at the Utah Department of Workforce Services. Utah was also a leader in job creation for 2019, up about 3 percent.
The fastest growth by percentage occurred in construction, education and health services and leisure and hospitality services. Washington County had the biggest job growth, followed by Rich and Iron counties.
The national unemployment rate was 3.5% in December. Utah tied Vermont and South Carolina for the lowest unemployment rate in the nation.
