TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - An Air National Guard brigadier general has been chosen to be the new Kansas Adjutant General, Gov. Laura Kelly announced Wednesday.

David Weishaar, who commands the Air Guard in Kansas as assistant adjutant general, will replace Adjutant General Lee Tafanelli, who plans to resign March 31.

Weishaar has served in the military for 39 years, after entering the Air Force in 1981. He served the past 15 years in the Air Guard at McConnell Air Force Base.

As adjutant general, Weishaar will be the top military adviser to the governor, lead the state’s Army and Air Guard operations and direct the state’s division of emergency management and homeland security.
