ASHBURN — Ron Rivera wanted to make one thing clear Thursday when introduced as the Washington Redskins’ next coach: He didn’t come here for the money.
Standing in front of lectern, the 57-year-old said he took the Redskins’ job because of conversations with owner Dan Snyder and the vision the two discussed.
Throughout a 25-minute press conference Thursday, Rivera said Snyder’s vision of a “coach-centered approach” was the reason he took the job.
“If I wanted the money I’d still be out there trying to pit teams against each other. I took this job for one simple reason,” Rivera said. “Because Dan Snyder came to me with a very interesting perspective. For weeks he’s explored the reasons why some teams win and some teams don’t. He told me the common factor in that transitional success for teams like the Patriots, Seahawks and Chiefs and some other ones was the decision to take it and make it a coach-centered approach.
“Not an owner’s centered approach or a team president or a GM, but a coach-centered approach. I told Mr. Snyder that I appreciate the fact that he believes the head coach matters.”
Rivera is 76-63-1 as a coach and spent eight-plus seasons with the Carolina Panthers before being fired last month.
