GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - A Delaware animal shelter is scheduled to receive several dozen dogs that have been evacuated from earthquake-ravaged Puerto Rico.

A group of rescue organizations are partnering to fly more than 110 at-risk shelter pets from Puerto Rico to Delaware, New Jersey and Florida, the Delaware State News reported.

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is expected to receive 30 dogs on the flight, which is expected to arrive in Georgetown on Sunday morning. The dogs will be available for adoption beginning Tuesday at the shelter’s three campuses in Delaware and Pennsylvania, according to the newspaper.

More than 1,280 earthquakes have hit Puerto Rico’s southern region since Dec. 28, more than two dozen of them magnitude 4.5 or greater, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quakes have damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage.

The seismic activity has also unleashed scientific debate about what’s causing it and drawn international attention to the area.
