DERBY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gov. Phil Scott has appointed a Newport police officer to become Orleans County sheriff.

Jennifer Harlow, who is expected to be sworn in later this month, will be Vermont’s only female sheriff, the Republican governor’s office said Wednesday. She is replacing Kirk Martin, who retired last month.

Harlow has worked in the Newport Police Department since 2004, where she has focused on preventing and investigating crimes against children, school safety, the opioid crisis, domestic violence and domestic violence related homicides, the governor’s office said.

“I’m confident Jennifer will bring an innovative and dynamic approach towards leading the department,” Scott said in a written statement. “Her long career in law enforcement and her commitment to her community will serve her well as sheriff.”
