ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland’s House Republicans outlined measures aimed at fighting crime on Thursday as priorities of the House GOP.
Del. Nic Kipke, the House minority leader, said the state is in the middle of a violent crime crisis, and lawmakers need to act.
One measure would require people convicted of a violent crime to serve at least 90% of their sentence before they are eligible for parole.
House Republicans are highlighting a measure to require state and local corrections officials to comply with immigration detainers for violent offenders when requested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
Another measure would make the theft of a firearm a felony, instead of a misdemeanor.
House GOP members also are supporting a bill to allow media to bring a camera in court during the sentencing portion o a criminal trial.
Republicans also are backing a measure to require victims of crime to be allowed to provide feedback in the court record about plea agreements.
