LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) - A 48-year-old man from DuPont died in a road rage shooting near Tacoma Wednesday evening after he and a 42-year-old man exited their vehicles with guns, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Williams was driving a Chevrolet Silverado at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday on Chamber Creek Road when he passed several vehicles, then stopped his truck in the middle of the roadway, blocking traffic. Williams exited his truck with a handgun, Troyer said.

A 42-year-old passenger from Steilacoom in a Dodge truck that was behind the Silverado also got out of the vehicle with a gun and got into a confrontation with Williams that ended when the passenger fired a fatal shot at Williams, Troyer said. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

There’s no indication the men previously knew each other.

The News Tribune reports that the shooter remained at the scene, was cooperating with investigators and as of Thursday morning had not been arrested.
