HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut officials are visiting a Jewish community center to talk about security, following the stabbing of five people celebrating Hanukkah at a rabbi’s home north of New York City.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, and the Jewish Federation of Connecticut plan to host a security discussion Thursday at the Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven.
The New York City region has been rocked by recent attacks on Jews. A man stabbed five people on Saturday at the home of a rabbi in Monsey, New York. On Dec. 10, two shooters targeted a kosher market in Jersey City, New Jersey, killing three people.
Blumenthal said he plans to announce a dramatic increase in federal security grants available to protect houses of worship in Connecticut. He’s also urging Congress to pass legislation he sponsored to help strengthen the reporting of hate crimes.
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, Democratic Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, local elected officials and Jewish leaders plan to take part in the discussion.
