President Trump on Saturday called on Major League Baseball to induct Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame and lift his lifetime ban for gambling.
“Pete Rose played Major League Baseball for 24 seasons, from 1963-1986, and had more hits, 4,256, than any other player (by a wide margin),” the president tweeted. “He gambled, but only on his own team winning, and paid a decades long price. Get Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It’s Time!”
Mr. Rose asked baseball commissioner Rob Manfred on Wednesday to remove his name from Major League Baseball’s ineligible list, which would allow him to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame.
His petition argued that Mr. Manfred recently opted not to punish players guilty of stealing the other teams’ signs in games.
Mr. Rose was banned in 1989 for gambling on baseball while he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
