WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - WSU Tech and its partners are offering laid-off workers at Spirit Aerosystems free tuition for retraining or advanced training in manufacturing and engineering.
The “Wichita Promise Scholarship” will pay tuition and fees for classes and programs for training or to help employees finish their associate degrees, college President Sheree Ustash announced Friday.
Spirit is laying off more than 2,800 workers in response to the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max. Spirit makes more than 70 percent of the Max.
“We’ve built these training opportunities with the laid-off worker in mind with short-term half-day classes so people can re-skill or finish their degree,” Sheree Ustash said Friday.
Classes will start in March. They will last six to eight weeks and be offered on half-day schedules.
WSU Tech will fund the scholarships through internal budgeting and with the help of community partner donations.
