PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A woman from the Dominican Republic pleaded guilty Wednesday to remaining in the U.S. after her visa expired and using a stolen identity and Social Security number to illegally obtain a Rhode Island driver’s license and government welfare benefits, federal prosecutors said
Sonia Jordain, 54, came to the U.S. on a six-month visa that expired in June 2003, but did not leave, prosecutors said.
She used the identity and Social Security number of a woman living in Puerto Rico to get a driver’s license in 2016. She also used the stolen information get a total of more than $50,000 in health care, unemployment insurance, food stamps and temporary disability insurance benefits to which she was not entitled, authorities said.
She pleaded guilty to false representation of citizenship, false representation of a Social Security number, aggravated identity theft, theft of public money, and wire fraud.
She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 7.
