CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Charleston, West Virginia, Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin on Wednesday named Sgt. James “Tyke” Hunt as the city’s new police chief.

Hunt was given the oath of office at a news conference. He previously served as an assistant chief of detectives.

“I want to work hard for you,” Hunt said. “We’re going to build this police department up. We’re going to get moving in the right direction. We’re going to be coming at you with a lot of steam, a lot of energy.”

Hunt replaces Opie Smith, who is retiring for personal reasons.

“Tyke is a star,” Goodwin said. “He loves his family. He loves the Lord. He loves the people in the city of Charleston and he loves what he does every single day. He’s a motivator. He’s a leader. He’s a man of character and a man whose moral compass is never wrong.”
