PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Foundation awarded a record $56 million in grants to more than 2,000 nonprofits throughout the state last year, the organization announced Friday.
The funding focused on education, health and economic security.
“We are grateful for the passionate and committed donors who have worked with us for more than a century to tackle the challenges and issues of the day,” Neil Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO said in a statement. “Partnering with nonprofit organizations to support their crucial work in the community, engaging generous donors and providing leadership around key issues for our state all played a role in our outstanding growth as we rise to meet the needs of all Rhode Islanders.”
The foundation also raised $47 million in 2019, ranging from just a few dollars to more than $4 million.
The Rhode Island Foundation was founded in 1916 by several prominent state residents, and got its first gift of $10,000 from industrialist and U.S. Sen. Jesse Metcalf. It is the largest funder of nonprofit organizations in the state.
