DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A suspect has been arrested in the death of a 71-year-old woman who was the victim of a hit-and-run as she crossed a Des Moines street last month, police in Des Moines said Friday.

Police said in a news release that Isaias Flores-Morales, 41, was arrested Thursday in Illinois on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, escaping custody, harassment and having no driver’s license or insurance in the death of Stephanie Markert. Markert died a week after being hit on Jan. 30 near the Drake University campus, where first responders found her in the street with critical injuries. Markert had been the house mother for Delta Gamma sorority at Drake at the time of her death.

Witnesses told police Markert had been hit by a sport utility vehicle that fled the scene and was abandoned a short distance down the street. The witnesses said a man got out of the SUV and into a minivan, then drove away.

Extradition proceedings are planned to return Flores-Morales to Des Moines, police said.
