SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) - An officer shot and killed a robbery suspect who came around a corner and approached him with a large knife outside a gas station convenience store, police said.
The officer shot the man Wednesday night after he had warned him several times to drop the knife, Sylvania Township Police Chief Paul Long said.
A store clerk who witnessed the shooting said the officer was backing up when he fired, Long said. The man earlier had threatened the clerk and came behind the counter at the store in suburban Toledo, the police chief said.
The names of those involved were not released.
An autopsy was planned Thursday. The officer has been placed on leave, which is department policy.
The clerk had called police before the robbery and said there was a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. A few minutes later when an officer arrived, the clerk said she had been robbed, police said.
The ambulance transporting the man after he was shot was involved in a crash, and a second took the suspect to the hospital, where he died, police said.
