CNN’s Christiane Amanpour said the time may be ripe for a NATO-inspired pact for members of the media: “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”
The network’s chief international anchor posted the message in addition to her remarks to a U.K. audience excoriating President Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“Let’s have our own ’NATO Article 5’: an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” she tweeted while sharing footage of her remarks before journalists overseas.
Ms. Amanpour’s commentary comes less than one year since she asked former FBI Director James B. Comey if American citizens who scream “Lock her up!” regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should be accused of “hate speech.”
“Do you, in retrospect, wish that people like yourself — the FBI, I mean — the people in charge of law and order, had shut down that language — that it was dangerous potentially, that it could’ve created violence, that it’s kind of hate speech?” she asked in April. “Should that have been allowed?”
“That’s not the role for government to play,” he replied.
Thursday’s remarks by the reporter saw her casting her audience and other reporters as a “pillar” of democracy and freedom.
“The Johnson administration here is trying to do to mainstream media what the Trump administration is in the United States has been doing for the past four years: to marginalize, to delegitimize, and maybe even to dismantle,” she said. “Be careful. Keep your guard up. We are the pillars are democracy and freedom. They may be there for a few turns. Journalists are there forever.”
