NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - An apparent hostage situation in one of Vermont’s prisons was resolved without injury, the Department of Corrections said Wednesday.
The incident at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport was reported at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday when two inmates were barricaded in a cell and refused to comply with directions from prison staff.
The Department of Corrections’ Crisis Intervention Team and Special Response teams were on site and activated immediately. The incident was successfully resolved, without injury to staff or inmates, at approximately 2:10 p.m.
The department did not identify the inmates involved, say what made the incident an apparent hostage situation or what, if any, disciplinary action or criminal charges would be taken against one or both of the inmates.
