DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - An armed Georgia man was fatally shot by police officers after he refused to put down his weapon, authorities said.
John Daniel Dixon, 75, was shot to death by DeKalb County police officers Thursday afternoon, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
The agency said police received a 911 call from a distressed woman who hung up the phone before providing a name or address. Police traced the call to an address in Decatur. When they arrived, Dixon came outside, holding a handgun and pointing it at officers, the GBI said.
Dixon was told to put his weapon down but refused, Police Chief Mirtha Ramos told news outlets. Two officers shot at Dixon, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, the GBI said.
Neither officer was injured. It’s unclear how many shots were fired. Another person was inside the home but it’s unclear if they were the one that called for help.
The GBI is investigating the incident.
