COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A homicide suspect was killed Thursday after a police shooting in Ohio’s capital city, according to city police.
The fatal shooting happened around 5 p.m. at a motel on the city’s north side, the Columbus Division of Police said on Twitter.
SWAT officers had been looking for a homicide suspect, and shots were fired after police outside a room announced their presence and a door was opened, said spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua.
“Once the door was opened they were met with gunfire, so the SWAT officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect who opened the door,” he said.
An investigation is underway. No officers were injured. Columbus police have been involved in several fatal shootings recently, including the shooting last month of a 15-year-old robbery suspect armed with a gun on the city’s east side.
In society today, “There are people willing to exchange gunfire in the course of a police officer trying to do his duty,” Fuqua said.
The city released a plan earlier this year meant to address police violence in the city.
