CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Tennessee board of trustees chairman wants to make interim university President Randy Boyd president on a regular basis for an additional five-year term.

Chairman John Compton said Wednesday he wanted to hear from students, faculty and staff on the issue, a news release from the university said.

“I ask that you go campus by campus and state your case,” Compton said to Boyd during the board of trustees meeting in Chattanooga.

Compton’s recommendation was based on positive feedback from Boyd’s review process, the release said.

The board will consider the proposal after a series of campus visits.

Trustees Kim White and Bill Rhodes agreed with the plan.

“We need to do it in short order, but we need to do it thoughtfully,” White said.

“I think it’s an elegant solution, but we don’t want to drag our feet,” Rhodes said.

Boyd agreed to serve as interim president in 2018 but said he would only serve two years. He said, however, that he has enjoyed serving as president.

“There’s no better job in the state of Tennessee than serving the state of Tennessee through the University of Tennessee,” Boyd said. “I’d be happy to continue serving for a few more years, if you’ll let me.”
