PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s Republican senator has joined a bipartisan group of colleagues calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to work harder to keep e-cigarettes out of the hands of children.
Sen. Susan Collins and others sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn that said the commissioner should prioritize “much-needed public health oversight to these unregulated, addictive, and kid-friendly tobacco products.” The senators wrote that millions of children are already vaping.
Collins and the other senators also said the FDA should remove all tobacco products that are out of compliance from the market. That includes products that appeal to or target underage people, they said.
Collins has also joined with other senators in sending a letter to FDA Center for Tobacco Products director Mitch Zeller about recent FDA guidance on vaping. The senators wrote the guidance has “glaring policy gaps that keeps kids addicted to flavored products.”
