BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man has been sentenced to serve 12 months in prison for hiding more than $435,000 from the Internal Revenue Service.

The sentencing of John P. Cooney of Birmingham was announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday.

Cooney pleaded guilty in February. According to federal officials, in 2011 he acknowledged filing three years of late returns, also admitting that he owed $780,000 for taxes due in 2008 through 2010.

Authorities said that Cooney created a company, GVA Advisors LLC, where he had his employer deposit his pay and also had investment dividends sent, totaling more than $435,000.

In addition to his 12-month sentence, authorities said Cooney was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay more than $1.3 million in restitution to the IRS.
