DETROIT (AP) - The façade of the Fisher Building in Detroit’s New Center area will be surveyed as part of the iconic structure’s restoration.
Scaffolding is being erected to allow crews to comb over the 325,000 square feet (30,193 square meters) of marble while collecting data for any necessary repairs. Surveying is expected to take four months.
The Fisher Building was designed by famed architect Albert Kahn and opened in 1928 several miles north of downtown.
Façade work and interior renovations are part of ongoing capital improvements. The ceiling in the building’s arcade is being restored. A heating and cooling system and some new elevators also have been installed.
Co-owner The Platform is leading the interior and exterior work. The Fisher Building’s ownership group also includes New York-based HFZ Capital Group and Rheal Capital Management.
“We take the stewardship of this storied building seriously and are honored to be restoring it to its former glory,” said Peter Cummings, executive chairman of The Platform. “We are committed to doing it right and in such a way that the Fisher will continue to be a ‘Beacon for Detroit’ for generations to come.”
