Redskins coach Ron Rivera raised more than $30,000 for charity Saturday in a yard sale, with thousands of fans purchasing Carolina Panthers memorabilia items in Charlotte.
The former coach of the Panthers, Rivera sold items donning Carolina colors, as well as other memorabilia such as Rivera’s briefcase. Proceeds went to the Humane Society of Charlotte, which also hosted the event.
The Charlotte Observer reported 3,000 fans attended the sale, adding Rivera spent three hours signing autographs and shaking hands.
“It’s an opportunity for us to give back to a community that’s been so supportive,” Rivera told the paper. “From the time I got here, Stephanie and I started building a relationship in the community, the community’s been so good to us. We wanted to make sure we gave back every opportunity we could, and this is our swan song, our last opportunity and really just to say thank you one last time.”
Rivera and his wife Stephanie had previously worked closely with the Humane Society, including adopting one of their dogs from the shelter.
According to the Observer, the charity plans to use the money toward building a new 46,000-square-foot campus.
